Fusing some of the most popular and culturally significant Spanish passions (tapas, sangria and flamenco), you’ll get a great taste of Spain tradition in an evening you won’t ever forget! Two performers will tell a story of love through the art of dance and music. The combination of the two, set against a classic narrative leaves an impression like no other art form!
During the show, you can sit back and enjoy the whole experience where you will be given a selection of traditional tapas and other famous foods from all over Spain, along with all the sangria you care to enjoy. It’s an evening which really will fill your plate, not just with food but with a broad range of Spanish culture!
Why did we want to use the Spanish for “atmosphere”? Because that’s exactly what it is: Spanish. The energy is one of the most noticeable parts of a Flamenco show. It’s a frenzy of colour, sound (both from the dancers and the musicians) and movement.
There’s a feeling of liberation in the performance which is very much connected to the culture, history and people themselves. You would really need a degree in performing arts to get close to a complete answer because the feelings you’ll experience in this evening are a translation of all things Spanish. You may leave feeling a little lighter on your feet!
It’s not just the performers who add to this. It’s the crowd too. From passionate applause to intimate silence. The Spanish really love Flamenco and their enjoyment will only add to your own. Don’t forget your own group! It’s always nice to have some fellow ‘aliens’ to make you feel more at home!
To really understand Spain, you have to look no further than your own stomach. Or Spanish stomachs at least. Food is a necessary part to everyone’s lives but, for the Spanish, it’s much more than this. It’s a part of all aspects of life in Spain, it’s woven itself heavily into culture and, most unusually, social life.
Food, for the Spanish, is an excuse to connect and the Spanish like to connect. Perhaps half an hour is an average meal time? The Spanish are known for eating often over two or more hours.
One secret behind this is “tapas”: they don’t have everything on the same plate at the same time. If this sounds ‘foreign’ to you - it is! But don’t be afraid to give it a try. You may become another convert!
We’re talking about the Flamenco. Although the tapas may well get you dancing too! The first thing to say about Flamenco is if you haven’t seen it before then you definitely haven’t seen it before. It’s unlike any other dancing you’ve seen.
Maybe the idea of watching dancing doesn’t appeal to you straight away? Maybe you’re imagining going to see a performance similar to one you and your classmates put together at the last minute with teachers breathing down your necks? Or maybe you’re thinking of ballet?
Well, it’s neither of these but it’s somewhere in-between the two. It has the freedom and fun of a child and the technicality and passion of ballet. It’s a balance which has made it one of the most popular and accessible dances in the world!
Describing Flamenco music is like trying to describe rock music. It’s an ancient musical form, with its beginnings traced back to between the 9th and 14th centuries. Instruments and musical styles from India combined with the tastes of the Moors and Sephardic jews in Spain at the time.
In spite of many transformations and evolutions within the genre, it has kept close to its traditions. Although the golden age of Flamenco music in Spain was between roughly 1780 and 1845, it has remained hugely popular. Many flamenco singers and musicians, such as Diego el Cigala, are household names.
Paco de Lucia, who died in 2014, had a metro station in Madrid named after him in honour of the contributions he had made to Flamenco guitar playing. Conclusion: it’s hugely popular and integral to Spanish history. What better way to absorb the Spanish story?
