Segway tours are extremely popular in Barcelona so we knew we had to get this right. Nothing would be more embarrassing for us than stories from another happy traveller of an even better Segway tour. That’s not going to happen! Not only do we know all the major Segway tours here, it’s also our job to know Barcelona. After carefully reviewing all the possibilities out there, we had to go with these guys.
The Barcelona Waterfront Segway Tour guides you around Barcelona’s most beautiful and well-known waterfront spots. These include; the historical marina 'Port Vell', the most popular beach in the city 'La Barceloneta' and the new marina next to the famous, sail boat-shaped W Hotel, as well as the ‘central park' 'Parc de la Ciutadella’, near the ‘Arc de Triomf’ monument and more.
Having a good guide can make or break a tour. If you’ve been on a tour, whether walking, bus, Segway or anything else, you’ll know how important this is. This tour scored very highly for the quality of their guides. We have three main criteria by which we judge the guides. Here they are:
1- Is their knowledge and the information they give on the tour interesting and accurate?
2- their personality: are they friendly, helpful, do they have a good sense of humour etc?
3- You could argue this is a part of personality but for us it is so important we put it in a separate category, is energy: did they have an uplifting and inspiring presence, or did they look like they didn’t really want to be there?
This City Sightseeing Tour starts at Barcelona’s biggest urban park (Parc de la Ciutadella). After exploring the Parc de la Ciutadella, the next stop is Port Vell which is Barcelona’s oldest marina. It has hundreds of beautiful boats as well as a idyllic port avenue lined with palm trees, imported from Hawaii for the 1992 Olympics held in Barcelona (point of interest!).
The Port Vell is centuries old and, given its centrality and Barcelona’s progressive nature, it has undergone many changes. There are still lots of historic buildings which have been unaffected, such as the 19th century trade warehouse Palau de Mar and the Port Vell Customs Building (more exciting than they sound!).
Not far from the Port Bell Customs Building and near the famous Las Ramblas is the Colombus Monument: an interesting and useful landmark which, like the Arc de Triomf, was built for the 1888 world exhibition. You’re not a local unless you know this place! After leaving Port Vell, you’ll pass the 'Maremàgnum Shopping Centre' and the 'Barcelona Aquarium' and onto to the seafront.
Equipment may sound like a given but unfortunately it isn’t. They say nothing in life is free and, while we’re not philosophers, this is certainly an example of that. If you choose to wander the streets and go with the first Segway tour you find, you’re entering a lottery which may not pay off.
To make it worse, the prices from untreated Segway tour providers doesn’t change much so maybe it’s more a case of being ripped off. Have you seen people ride Segways before? They’re a lot of fun. We see them in action everyday here and we also see them out of action everyday too.
Not only can it spoil your outing having to wheel your Segway back to the shop but it’s also dangerous. We don’t want to scare you but it can often scare us. Well maintained, good equipment should be a given. It’s a bit like finding a trusted car dealer. It takes time and experience: our main service.
So often in life, there’s a catch. Maybe the route will be great but the guide will be bad. Maybe it will all be amazing but cost the earth. Here’s another one we always look out for: maybe it will be amazing, reasonably priced but located 10 miles out of town.
Don’t worry! These guys are located near Arc de Triomf. This is itself a major central monument to see in CENTRAL Barcelona. Yes, it’s very central and well connect by metro and bus but, if you’re staying anywhere central, you should be able to walk there.
They’ll take care of you. This means they’ll give you helmets and make sure you’re wearing plenty of sun cream if it’s a sunny day. They recommend not to wear high heels - but it’s up to you. They don’t want anyone straining to hear what they have to say - or not be able to ask any questions. If this happens, they’ll separate into smaller groups. No pasa nada (no worries)!
